Ethiopian Ambassador visits medical school and university hospital, with focus on neurosurgery

Mr. Daba Debele Hunde, Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Japan, and Ms. Ahlam Awel Seid, the Ethiopian Embassy’s Third Secretary, visited our Graduate School of Medicine and university hospital on July 25, 2024.

The visit was motivated by Ambassador Daba’s interest in the cutting-edge treatment provided by our Neurosurgery Department.

Graduate School of Medicine Vice Dean Professor Fuminori Tokunaga, who is also the Advisor to the President for International Public Relations, welcomed the Ethiopian delegation alongside Neurosurgery Department Professor Takeo Goto and Professor Yasutoshi Kido of the Department of Virology and Parasitology.

Professor Tokunaga began the meeting with an overview of the university and the Graduate School of Medicine. Professor Goto followed with an introduction of the Neurosurgery Department’s initiatives and the international technical exchange of neurosurgeons’ situation. Afterwards, Professor Kido shared his own research progress and talked about his many contacts in Africa.

Ambassador Daba listened enthusiastically to the professors and shared Ethiopia’s current situation in which the East African nation is facing challenges amid rapid economic development. He further mentioned the possibility of educational, research, and technological exchanges, including in medicine.

In turn, it was confirmed that OMU will positively consider expanding and promoting international exchanges in the future.

After the meeting, Ambassador Daba visited the central operating room of OMU Hospital and dropped by Professor Kido’s laboratory to interact with international students.
