University of Hawaii Maui College delegation visits Sugimoto Campus; official reflects on memories

A three-member delegation from the University of Hawaii Maui College visited the Sugimoto Campus on October 21, 2024. The group consisted of Ms. Stephanie Ohigashi of the Office of International Partnerships, Dr. Valerie Matsunaga, a lecturer, and Mr. Alan Matsunaga.

This visit was made possible by an inquiry from Ms. Ohigashi, who spent part of her childhood at the Sugimoto Campus when it was briefly known as Camp Sakai. That name came about when US forces occupied Japan and used the campus as a garrison and army hospital for about 10 years after World War II.

OMU’s international and domestic public relations members shared with the delegation some photos and documents of Camp Sakai. The group then toured the gymnasium and the top floor of Building No. 2, where there are remnants from those early postwar days. (This area is usually off-limits to the public.)

Ms. Ohigashi was moved by the precious facilities that retained the vestiges of the past, recalling her childhood.

Following the tour, OMU and University of Hawaii Maui College introduced each other’s universities and shared positive opinions about future student exchanges.
