Japan grants ASPIRE for Top Scientists funding to global project led by Professor Koichi Kise

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) announced on December 2, 2024, that Professor Koichi Kise of the Graduate School of Informatics has been chosen as a recipient of ASPIRE funding for his collaborative research project titled “Formation of a Japan-Germany multilayered R&D network for medical x AI and its application to industry creation.”

As one of only 14 proposals nationwide selected for the prestigious ASPIRE for Top Scientists program, funding for five years of up to 500 million yen will be provided to this joint research project with DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.

The ASPIRE (Adopting Sustainable Partnerships for Innovative Research Ecosystem) program aims to promote the global participation of top researchers in Japan and foster an international network through joint research in advanced science and technology.

“With this support from JST, we will conduct international joint research on medical AI, with a focus on student and young researcher exchanges with DFKI,” explained Professor Kise, who has for many years been at the center of collaborative exchanges with OMU and the German research center. “Not only is DFKI a global center for artificial intelligence with a long history since its founding in 1988, but it is also a world-leading organization in terms of contributions to various industries and the creation of startups. Through our research collaboration, we hope to develop many globally ready OMU researchers.”
