OMU office opened at DFKI in Germany

Osaka Metropolitan University has opened an office at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and held an opening ceremony on December 2, 2024. This comes at the culmination of Graduate School of Informatics Professor Koichi Kise’s international joint research and exchanges with DFKI for more than 25 years.

Professor Koichi Kise and Yuta Nonomiya, an OMU third-year PhD student on exchange at DFKI, attended the opening ceremony with DFKI’s CFO Mr. Helmut Ditzer, Professor Andreas Dengel, and other researchers with ties to OMU.

The ceremony opened with a congratulatory video message from President Masahiro Tatsumisago. Professor Kise gave an opening address followed by a speech from Professor Dengel. During his presentation, Professor Dengel introduced his ties with Professor Kise, their collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence, and how the research has grown into an international project. The first half of the ceremony concluded with statements that they will continue to deepen their collaborative partnership not only through research, but also in education, through the training of young researchers and students.

The latter half of the celebration was a tour of the newly opened OMU office and the signing of a letter of intent. This office will be used for various purposes, including meetings for researchers staying at DFKI, the introduction of OMU's activities, and display of information material.

DFKI Lab Japan has been open on the Nakamozu campus since 2022. With the opening of the new OMU Kaiserslautern office in DFKI, both sides now have a base, which is expected to further strengthen academic and research exchange in the future.
