Prediction of measurement precision for fringe projection photogrammetry using whole-space tabulation method

Osaka Metropolitan University researchers present a straightforward method for predicting the average measurement precision of fringe projection photogrammetry in a target area. The proposed method employs a whole-field tabulation method with two reference planes during calibration and analyzes the phase value of the fringe patterns using a sampling Moiré method.

An equation was formulated to estimate image noise from single-shot image data, and an empirical law was developed to describe the relation between phase analysis precision and image noise by considering the effects of the image data resolution on the phase analysis precision. In addition, an equation was derived to link phase analysis precision to measurement precision based on the error propagation theorem.

By integrating the abovementioned equations, a straightforward method was established to predict the involved average measurement precision based on single-shot image data. Surface shape measurements of a white plate, polyimide film, and 1.5-m-diameter parabolic antenna reflector demonstrated that the proposed method estimates actual measurement precision.

Overall, this research provides a practical method for simply predicting the average measurement precision of fringe projection photogrammetry, enabling easy determination of an appropriate image data resolution that achieves the required measurement precision.
