International Exchange

The Osaka Metropolitan University Graduate School/ School of Literature and Human Sciences not only conducts joint research with top-level researchers across the globe, but also offers various opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to study around the world. The following are some examples of the international exchange programs offered:

Joint Research Projects and International Conferences

A number of joint projects are conducted with researchers from around the globe, such as the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of History, Shanghai Normal University (both from China), Pusan National University Center for Korean Studies (South Korea), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), University of Illinois (USA) and University of Hamburg (Germany). In December of 2015, Osaka City University held the international symposium “The Context and Conflict of Cultural Contact: the Environment, Areas for Living and the City in EU Countries.”

Apart from this, many of the faculty members network with international universities and researchers, holding joint symposiums overseas and being invited for lectures and talks.

Daily Interaction with International Researchers

Many researchers from overseas, including experts in the fields of philosophy, history, geography, psychology, education, sociology, literature, linguistics and art, visit the Osaka Metropolitan University Graduate School/ School of Literature and Human Sciences. Using this opportunity, workshops and seminars held by such researchers and faculty members are open to both undergraduate and graduate students (International School program) to provide a first-hand experience of international research on a routine basis.

Cultivating Students with an International Perspective

The Osaka Metropolitan University Graduate School/ School of Literature and Human Sciences strives to cultivate students with the ability to act on a global scale. At the same time, the School offers both short-term language studies and exchange programs with collaborating universities overseas (in the UK, France, Russia, Germany, China, Taiwan and Korea). Intensive courses at the International School (IS) are also open to graduate students interested in improving their English language skills (the course is also open to undergraduate students as well). Financial aid is also provided to actively support research presentations and fieldwork conducted abroad by graduate students and young researchers. These are efforts that extend and develop the “International School Program (IS),” supported by the grants-in-aid by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Graduate School (GP),” and the “Institutional Program for Young Researcher Overseas Visits,” aided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The School also provides technical support for writing and submitting papers in foreign languages.

Support for international students

The Global Exchange Office can apply to the Japanese Immigration Bureau for a Certificate of Eligibility on behalf of students who are not yet in Japan and who need a ‘College student’ visa.
