Dean’s Message

Taking Steady Steps toward the Future

Daisuke Tsuruta, MD, PhD
Dean, Graduate School of Medicine and the School of Medicine

Dean Daisuke Tsuruta

I became the new dean of the Graduate School of Medicine and the School of Medicine in April 2024. I have been a professor of dermatology for 10 years. I also served as an assistant to the director of the hospital and assistant to the dean of the graduate school. I also worked on globalization at the university -wide level as a specially appointed vice president in charge of international exchange and public relations. With these experiences, I aim to further develop the Graduate School of Medicine and the School of Medicine. Over the past four years, the then dean, Professor Norifumi Kawada, energetically pushed forward reforms in a variety of areas. Based on these foundations, my first and only goal is to bring them to maturity and create an environment where each member of our community can easily achieve results.

To start, I would like to secure more time for education, medical treatment, and research for all members. Due to the reform of working styles, time is more constrained than ever before. However, we cannot sacrifice in the slightest the time for education, medical care, and research. For this reason, as a concrete initiative, we are working to improve the efficiency of meetings, especially by consolidating them, and reconsidering the frequency of meetings, desired times, and number of participants. Next, we are thinking of promoting diversity. We hope to improve productivity and promote diversity in the graduate school through the active employment of female faculty members and foreign faculty members, and the introduction of the cross-appointment system.

In terms of education, we aim to develop medical professionals with “Wisdom, Valor and Benevolence,” and in pre-graduate education, we would like to further expand integrated classes and incorporate IT into the curriculum. We also believe that strengthening our international character is essential for increasing Osaka Metropolitan University’s presence in the future. We will consider introducing the International Baccalaureate course in the entrance exam. Furthermore, we would like to develop a wide range of new activities, including enhancing English lectures and practical training for both pre- and post-graduate education, and securing international students.

On the research front, we aim to strengthen both basic and clinical research and build a highly internationally competitive research system. We would like to improve research support, such as improving infrastructure, building an international research network, increasing the acquisition of external funds, and creating an environment in which young people in particular can engage in new research fields. Furthermore, we are planning to create a new research base by launching a dementia-focused branch hospital and research center.

Regarding internationalization, we will promote international joint research, create a multicultural environment, and develop a system for hiring foreign faculty and staff. This will create an environment in which domestic and international researchers and students can learn together and advance their research.

Finally, in terms of public relations and university branding, we will strengthen information dissemination through social media and our website, establish an innovative image of Osaka Metropolitan University, and strengthen collaboration with the local community.

By steadily moving forward with the above, we would like to establish a system in which both the graduate school and the faculty can support the strengthening of medical care at the university hospital and affiliated hospitals by strongly collaborating with the university hospital executive department on the medical front. Through these efforts, we aim to improve the brand value of the Graduate School of Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine domestically and internationally. In this way, we hope to contribute to the stable development of Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Medicine and School of Medicine.
