From Kansai International Airport (KIX) to JR Kyoto Station

There are two railways, JR and Nankai, serving at KIX. Please take the JR express train HARUKA (timetable for JR trains departing from KIX) to Kyoto. HARUKA departs from KIX every 30 minutes and arrives at the final destination, JR Kyoto Station, in 75 minutes. The fare is 3,490 yen for a reserved seat and 2,980 yen for a non-reserved seat (subject to change). We recommend you to purchase a reserved seat ticket, especially after a long flight. The JR ticket office called Midori-no-madoguchi accepts major credit cards.

HARUKA arrives at the platform #30 of the JR Kyoto Station.
By Taxi: Go out of the JR Kyoto Station through the Karasuma Central Exit (central ticket gate on the map). Then you will find a taxi depot on the right hand side soon. Please show the slip [jpg] to the taxi driver. You do not need to tip in Japan. It takes about 15 minutes and costs about 2,000 yen, both depending on the traffic.
By Subway: If your luggage is not heavy, you can take the subway to the hotel. Then it is more convenient to use the direct underground way to the subway from the JR Kyoto station than to go through the Karasuma Central Exit. Take the subway Karasuma Line (northbound) to Marutamachi Station. It takes 7 minutes and costs 230 yen. From Marutamachi Station, walk north on Karasuma Street. It takes 3 minutes to the Palace Side Hotel. Here are the map of the hotel and the subway map.

From JR Kyoto Station to RIMS

By Taxi: It takes 20 minutes and costs about 2,000 to 2,500 yen. Please show the slip [jpg] to the taxi driver.
By Bus: Go out of the JR Kyoto Station through the Karasuma Central Exit and go straight. You will find the bus terminal. Take the Kyoto City Bus #17 bound for Ginkaku-ji via Kawaramachi Street (northbound) to Kitashirakawa. The fare is 220 yen.
By Subway and Bus: Take the subway Karasuma Line (northbound) to Imadegawa Station. It takes 10 minutes and costs 230 yen. Go out through the #3 southern exit and take a taxi or Kyoto City Bus #203 bound for Ginkaku-ji via Imadegawa Street or Kinrinshako via Ginkaku-ji (eastbound) to Kitashirakawa. The bus fare is 220 yen. RIMS is just 2 minutes walk away from Kitashirakawa bus stop and the mathematics department is also nearby. Please see the map of the Yoshida campus of Kyoto University: Math. Dept. (#5), RIMS (#11).

From Palace Side Hotel to RIMS

The easiest way is to take a taxi. Please show the slip [jpg] to the taxi driver. It costs about 1,000 to 1,500 yen. So if three people share one taxi, the fare for each should be about or less than 500 yen. The other way is to walk north on Karasuma Street for about 900 meters to Karasuma and Imadegawa. Then take Kyoto City Bus #203 bound for Ginkaku-ji via Imadegawa Street or Kinrinshako via Ginkaku-ji (eastbound) to Kitashirakawa. The bus fare is 220 yen.

From Kyoto to Tokyo and Tokyo Narita International Airport

Take the Tokaido-Shinkasen (bullet train) from the JR Kyoto Station to the JR Tokyo Station. It takes about 2 hours and a half by HIKARI and about 2 hours and 20 minutes by NOZOMI. Here are the timetable and the fares and surcharges for Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen. If your final destination is Tokyo Narita International Airport, you continue to take the JR NARITA EXPRESS train. Since you have to walk all the way at the JR Tokyo station to change from Shinkansen to Narita Express, it is recommended to change at Shinagawa instead, especially when your luggage is heavy. It takes about 1 hour from the JR Tokyo station to Narita Airport by Narita Express. If you go to Narita, buy your ticket all way through from Kyoto to Narita Airport at the JR Kyoto Station. The total fare will be 15,930 - 16,900 yen (subject to change).
