Summary
Professor Yutaka Amao (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and graduate student Mika Takeuchi (first-year master's student, Graduate School of Science) have successfully synthesized fumaric acid, a precursor for plastics, directly from carbon dioxide using solar energy.
While fumaric acid, a precursor for biodegradable polybutylene succinate, is currently synthesized from petroleum, this research has achieved the synthesis of fumaric acid directly from carbon dioxide and biomass-derived compounds using renewable energy.
This research achievement was published online on December 13, 2022, in the journal Sustainable Energy & Fuels of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
We have been continuously conducting research toward the practical application of artificial photosynthesis. In our previous research, we utilized biocatalysts, and in this study, we successfully employed visible light as a driving force. We are delighted to have made another step forward in research that contributes to the utilization of clean energy. Based on these results, we would like to focus on improving the efficiency of the reaction in the future.
