Summary

Professor Yutaka Amao of the Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Osaka Metropolitan University and Mika Takeuchi (1st year master's student) of the Graduate School of Science have succeeded for the first time in synthesizing fumaric acid, a raw material for plastics, using solar energy using carbon dioxide.

Fumaric acid has been synthesized from petroleum as a raw material for polybutylene succinate, a biodegradable plastic, but the results of this research will enable synthesis of carbon dioxide and biomass-derived compounds using renewable energy.

The results of this research were published online in the journal "Sustainable Energy & Fuels" of the Royal Society of Chemistry on December 13, 2022.

We are continuing our research toward the practical application of artificial photosynthesis, and last time we took on the challenge of using biocatalysts and this time using visible light, which is a renewable energy, as a driving force, and succeeded. We are delighted to be able to take another step forward in research that will help us use clean energy. In the future, based on the results obtained, I would like to work on improving the efficiency of the reaction process.
