A press release announcing the research findings of Prof. Yutaka Amao and Graduate student Yu Kita has been issued.

Achieved 80% yield in synthesizing biodegradable plastic feedstock using sunlight and carbon dioxide!

Key points of this study

  • A New Breakthrough in Artificial Photosynthesis: Utilizing Sunlight and Carbon Dioxide
  • Successful synthesis of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, a precursor for biodegradable plastics.
  • Achieved an astonishing 80% yield from acetone!

Summary

Professor Yutaka Amao (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and Graduate student Yu Kita (2nd year doctoral student at the Graduate School of Science, Osaka City University) have successfully synthesized 3-hydroxybutyric acid, a precursor for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a water-insoluble, high-strength polyester used in packaging materials, with a remarkable 80% yield from acetone using a photocatalytic system and two enzymes, combining it with carbon dioxide. This research, which successfully synthesized a precursor for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable plastic, by artificially replicating the light and dark reactions of photosynthesis, utilizing sunlight to fix carbon dioxide, holds great promise for addressing both the plastic pollution and carbon dioxide reduction problems.
