A press release on the research results of Prof. Yutaka Amao and Graduate student Yu Kita has been issued.

Yield 80%! Successful synthesis of biodegradable plastics using sunlight and carbon dioxide!

Key points of this study

  • The royal road to artificial photosynthesis! New results using solar and carbon dioxide
  • Succeeded in synthesizing 3-hydroxybutyric acid, which is a material for biodegradable plastics
  • The yield from acetone achieves an astonishing 80%!

Summary

Professor Yutaka Amao (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and Graduate student Yu Kita (2nd year doctoral student at the Graduate School of Science, Osaka City University) have succeeded in synthesizing 3-hydroxybutyric acid, a polyester that is insoluble in water and has strength, and which is the raw material for polyhydroxybutyric acid (PHB) used in packaging materials, with a high yield of about 80% from acetone combined with carbon dioxide by combining a photoredox system using sunlight and two enzymes.
The results of this research, which were able to synthesize the raw material for PHB, a biodegradable plastic, by artificially reproducing the light reaction involving sunlight and the dark reaction that fixes carbon dioxide as well as natural photosynthesis, are expected to lead to the solution of both the plastic problem and the carbon dioxide reduction problem.
