A press release on the results of research by Prof. Yutaka Amao and Graduate student Mika Takeuchi has been issued

Contributing to CO2 reduction with natural photosynthesis application technology! Successful conversion of carbon dioxide into plastic raw materials

Key points of this study

  • Using a biocatalyst, we succeeded in synthesizing fumaric acid, a raw material for plastics, from carbon dioxide.
  • Expectations are high for polymer synthesis using light energy that highly reproduces natural photosynthesis.

Summary

Professor Yutaka Amao (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and Graduate student Mika Takeuchi (1st year, Master's course, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science) have succeeded in synthesizing fumaric acid, a raw material for unsaturated polyester resins, by binding carbon dioxide to pyruvate, a biomass-derived compound, and using two biocatalysts, decarboxylation malate dehydrogenase and fumarate hydratase.

Currently, fumaric acid is synthesized from petroleum as a raw material for polybutylene succinate, a biodegradable plastic, but the results of this research will make it possible to synthesize it with carbon dioxide and biomass-derived compounds.

The results of this research were published online on July 13, 2022 in the preliminary edition of the international journal "Reaction Chemistry & Engineering" of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
