The research findings of Grad. Student Mika Takeuchi (currently at Daicel Corporation) and Prof. Yutaka Amao have been featured on the cover of an academic journal.
A paper by Professor Yutaka Amao's research group at the Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, titled "Fumarate production from pyruvate and low concentrations of CO2 with a multi-enzymatic system in the presence of NADH and ATP" has been published in the New Journal of Chemistry, a journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The paper was featured on the cover of the November 2024 issue (Volume 48, Number 42). The paper was also selected as a HOT Article in the New Journal of Chemistry for 2024.
Professor Amao and his research team have successfully produced fumaric acid, a raw material for biodegradable plastics, from pyruvate, a biomass-derived compound, and low-concentration CO2 (15% or less) equivalent to emissions from coal-fired power plants. This was achieved using a multi-enzyme system in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Biodegradable plastics decompose naturally after use, offering a promising solution to the serious environmental pollution caused by the disposal of petroleum-based plastics. This research is expected to contribute to the improvement of technologies for producing environmentally friendly plastic raw materials.
<Remarks from Professor Amao>
The cover image depicts the process of converting carbon dioxide, emitted from industrial facilities such as factories and coal-fired power plants, into fumaric acid through a recycling process.
