How can we investigate past eruptions of submarine volcanoes?

講演内容

Japan has many submarine volcanoes, including volcanoes which have erupted explosively in the past. However, most of these submarine volcanoes have never had a directly observed eruption. Are they young, active volcanoes? How frequently do they erupt? Are they capable of producing hazardous eruptions? These questions are difficult to answer when volcanoes are hidden beneath the ocean waves. In this seminar I will introduce how we can conduct submarine surveys and collect samples of past eruption deposits from the seafloor. I will then discuss my research, which uses analyses of the dissolved magmatic gas contents of volcanic ash and pumice to investigate their eruption styles and ages, with examples from submarine volcanoes in Japan and around the world.
