晶析分野
私たちの生活に不可欠な医薬品、食品、そして実験に使われる化学薬品などの多くは粉末として流通しています。そして、その多くが結晶です。一口に結晶といってもすべての結晶が同じ形や構造をしているのではありません。結晶構造が異なれば溶解度や溶解速度などが異なるため、医薬品においては効き目にも影響を及ぼす恐れがあります。このような分野の基盤技術を発展させるため、工業的に結晶を製造するための研究、すなわち晶析の研究を行っています。
バイオマス分野
再生可能エネルギーの有効活用を図るために、木質系バイオマスの水熱分解に関する研究を行っています。木質系バイオマスに含まれるセルロースやヘミセルロースはバイオエタノールの原料となりますが、もう一つの成分であるリグニンの利用法は確立されていません。リグニンは、石油以来の化学原料の代替品となる可能性があるので、効率の良い分解法について研究を行っています。
