11-13 September 2019 2019 Annual Fall Meeting of JIMS and The 178th ISIJ Meeting were held at Okayama University, Tsuyama campus from September 11 to 13, 2019. Professor NUMAKURA, INOUE Daisuke(D2) and ISHIKAWA Ukyo(M2) participated and had poster presentations. Each of INOUE and ISHIKAWA were commended for 'Outstanding Performance Awards' by JIMS and ISIJ.
5-6 September 2019 We had a labo excursion to Shikoku and Awajishima. Between two tyhpoons, fortunately, it was neither rainy or too sunny and hot, Professor Numakura and seven labo students had a fun time together.
17 July 2019 We invited Dr. Haruyuki INUI of Kyoto University as one of the Materials Science Colloquia speakers at Osaka Prefecture University. The lecture was titled 'High-entropy alloys:New emerging materials?' Both undergraduate and graduate students attended in gratitude.
24-28 June 2019 15th International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids (DSL 2019) took place in Athens, Greece. Associate Professor Nakamura was invited and gave a lecture on diffusion of boron in iron.

24 March 2019 The 2018 graduation ceremony was held. From our labo, OKUGAWA Masayuki received doctor's degree. HAMANA Keisuke, HANYA Yuki and WATANABE Kenta received masters' degrees, and bachelors' degrees for KONDO Junya, SUGITA Kengo, TAMAI Naoya and HAZAMA Masahide. Congratulations to them all.
12-13 October 2018 Professor Numakura, Okugawa(D3), Ishikawa(M1) participated in the 35th research meeting of the 172nd Committee on Alloy Phase Diagrams of the JSPS held in Hakodate.
27 September - 14 October 2018 From Graz University of Technology, Institute of Materials Science, we invited Associate Professor Dr. Wolfgang Sprengel. He gave lectures and seminars mainly to the master students.
19-21 September 2018 Professor Numakura and Hamana Keisuke, Watanabe Kenta, both M2 students, and Ishikawa Ukyo, M1 student, attended the 176th ISIJ autumn meeting held in Sendai, Japan at Tohoku University. At its poster session, U.Ishikawa was awarded for his effort made in his research.
18-21 September 2018 The 79th JSAP Autumn Meeting, 2018 was held in Nagoya. Associate Professor Dr. Nakamura and Okugawa Masayuki, doctor student, attended the meeting and had presentations.
7-13 July 2018 Dr. Nakamura attended International Conference on PROCESSING & MANUFACTURING OF ADVANCED MATERIALS - Processing, Fabrication, Properties, Applications - (Thermec’2018) held in Paris, France and delivered an invited lecture.
1 April 2018 Three new senior students have been assigned to our labo.
24 March 2018 Ishikawa Ukyo, one of our senior students has won 'Shirasagi-sho' at the 2017 graduation ceremony. 'Shirasagi-sho' is an award for those who graduated at the top of the class and made outstanding achievement in their study.
24 March 2018 The 2017 graduation ceremony took place and ten studens from our labo received diplomata. ISHII Tomoaki, INOUE Daisuke, TAKEMURA Yuto, MIYATA Tomoyuki and Lin SiLong received masters' degrees. ISHIKAWA Ukyo, KAMAEGUCHI Miyu, KITANO Yuto, TAKEMOTO Koki and TAMAOKA Yui received bachelors' degrees.
19 - 21 March 2018 Dr. Numakura and MIYATA Tomoyuki, master student, attended the 175th ISIJ meeting in Chiba, Japan. T. Miyata has won the Outstanding Performance Award at the poster session.
7 March 2018 We have invited Dr. Rafal Kozubuski of M. Smoluchouwski Instutute of Physics, Jagiellonian University, located in Krakow, Poland. A seminar on 'Vacancy-mediated self- and inter-diffusion in intermetallics: Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation' was held at Osaka Prefecture University.
19 December 2017 Dr. Shigeto Nishitani, a professor of Department of Informatics of School of Science and Technology, Kwansei Gakuin University has visited our labo to give a lecture on 'Knowledge acquired from first-principal calculations on nucleation mechanisms' to our students.
12 - 15 September 2017 Dr. Numakura and MIYATA Tomoyuki, master student, have attended the 18th International Conference on Internal Friction and Mechanical Spectroscopy (ICIFMS-18) took place in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.
26 - 30 June 2017 The 13th International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids(DSL2017) took place in Vienna, Austria. There Dr. Numakura and INOUE Daisuke, master student, had presentations. Inoue had a poster session and won the 'Best Poster Award.'
5 - 7 May 2017 Dr. Nakamura attended International Conference on Diffusion in Materials(DIMAT2017) held in Haifa, Israel and had a presentation.
24 - 28 March 2015 Dr Marcel Sluiter (TU Delft) stayed at the lab to work together in the JST CREST project on the solute–solute interaction in iron. On 26 and 27 we organised a discussion meeting on the theoretical part, with ten colleagues of Furuhara team.
20 December 2015 We organised a research meeting of the JST CREST project in the campus. Eighteen people got together, including two research advisors and one of the personnel from the JST, to present and discuss the latest results of the research.
5 December 2014 A seminar entitled ‘Diffusion in materials — Fundamendals, diffusion and related phenomena in steels’, an event of Kansai Regional Office of the ISIJ–JIM, took place at Osaka Science & Technology Center.
6 - 8 November 2014 Dr Yuriy Yagodzinskyy (Aalto University, Finland) visited us. He gave a talk on hydrogen embrittlement of austenitic stainless steels at an informal seminar on Friday 7.
3 - 6 November 2014 The 4th International Symposuium on Steel Science (ISSS 2014) is to take place in Kyoto. Professor Numakura, the chairperson of the previous meeting, will attend it.

4 July 2012 Dr Wolfgang Sprengel (TU Graz, Austria) visited us and gave a seminar entitled ‘Dilatometry and positron annihilation: Two complementary techniques for specific studies of structural defects in bulk ultrafine-grained metals’.
27 - 30 May 2012 Professor Numakura, Dr Nakamura and Dr Souissi participated in The 3rd International Symposium on Steel Science (ISSS 2012) held in Kyoto. Professor Numakura gave a keynote lecture and Dr Souissi presented a poster. Professor Numakura was the chairperson of the symposium.
25 March - 4 April 2012 Dr Marcel H. F. Sluiter (Delft University of Technology) stayed in Sakai. He participated in the ISIJ symposium 'Nanoscale inhomogeneities in steels and their control' (29 March, at Yokohama National University) and the informal discussion meeting of the 'i-s forum' of the ISIJ (2 April, at Osaka Prefecture University) and discussed with us recent developments on theoretical studies of interstitial solute atoms in iron.
1 March 2012 Dr NAKAMURA Ryusuke (formerly Assistant professor, The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka University) joined our group as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor.
10 February 2012 Dr Souissi participated in the 6th meeting of the ACCMS-VO (Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science - Virtual Organization) held in Sendai and Matsushima, 10 - 12 February, and presented a poster entitled 'Theoretical approach to the nature of light elements dissolved in iron', co-authored with Professor Chen Ying (Tohoku U) and Professor Numakura.
17 October 2011 The website of The 3rd International Symposium on Steel Science — ISSS 2012 (27-30 May 2012, Kyoto) has been updated to be almost the final form. Now poster presentations are being called for.
8 October 2011 Professor Numakura and Dr Souissi discussed research plans of their electronic structure calculations on i–s interaction in iron with Dr CHEN Ying (Associate professor, Tohoku Univeristy) at Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University.
7 October 2011 Professor Numakura and Dr Souissi participated in the ‘site visit’ event of the JST CREST research project held at Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, which the director and advisors attended. Professor Numakura presented the focus of his team and some recent results.
6 October 2011 Professor Numakura gave a talk ‘Element strategy in steels — Roles of solute elements in α iron’ at the 23rd biannual lecture meeting of Department of Materials Science.
1 October 2011 Dr Maaouia SOUISSI joined our group as JST CREST post-doc researcher. He is going to work on interaction between interstitial and substitutional solute atoms in iron by electronic structure calculations.
29 September 2011 Dr SAIDA Junji (Associate Professor, Tohoku University) visited us and gave a talk at an informal seminar about structural relaxation and deformability of metallic glasses.
20 September 2011 Graduate student UDO Ryujiro made an oral presentation ‘Effect of post-weld heat treatment on reliability of duplex stainless steel’ at the autumn meeting of the Institute of Iron and Steel, Japan, held at Suita Campus of Osaka University.
22 July 2011 Dr Marcel H. F. SLUITER (Delft University of Technology) and his collaborator Dr IIKUBO Satoshi (Kyushu Institute of Technology) visited us. Dr Sluiter gave a talk ‘Computational science and steel research’ at our informal seminar. They discussed recent results on their research on iron with Professor Numakura.
4-8 July 2011 Professor Numakura and three graduate students (Akaki T, Fujimoto S, Honda K) participated in the 16th International Conference on Internal Friction and Mechanical Spectroscopy held at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, and presented the lastest results in an oral presentation and three posters.
February 2011 Our collaborative research proposal, ‘Creation of new principles in the multi-scale design of steels based on light element strategy’, submitted to JST’s CREST framework, in the research area ‘Creation of innovative functions of intelligent materials on the basis of the element strategy’, has been accepted. Under direction by Professor Furuhara (IMR, Tohoku U), our team at OPU, lead by Professor Numakura, will take part in the project through ‘Evaluation of interaction energies between carbon/nitrogen and alloying elements’.
