【発表要旨】

Recent academic debates on the production of geographical knowledge have problematised language as navigating opportunities and interactions but also manifesting hegemony and privilege. This presentation preliminarily explores the role of language translation in the establishment and development of the discipline of geography in Japan. Drawing on various forms of evidence collected in Japan, it discusses the motives and contexts for translating and importing geographical knowledge, and examines how language translation has influenced the ways of producing, organising, and transmitting geographical knowledge. Potential strategies for enhancing the mobility of geographical knowledge across languages and places are also discussed.

地理学的知識の生産に関する最近の学術的な議論では、言語は機会や相互作用を媒介する一方で、ヘゲモニーや特権を明示するものとして問題視されている。本発表では、日本における地理学分野の確立と発展における言語翻訳の役割について予備的に検討する。日本国内で収集された様々な証拠をもとに、地理的知識の翻訳や輸入の動機と文脈について議論し、言語翻訳が地理的知識の生産、組織化、伝達の方法にどのような影響を与えたかを検討する。また、言語や場所を超えた地理的知識の移動性を高めるための潜在的な戦略についても議論される。
